NEWS FROM CANARY ISLANDS

Coastal winter days sit at roughly 22-25°C and the seasonal swing in temperatures is remarkably small: high summer typically brings 26-30°C. Nights rarely drop below 17°C, and even in January the sea temperature holds around 19°C.

Any rain is brief and short in the Islands, mainly concentrated between October and March and usually arrives as brief showers overnight in the northern island parts; the southern resort coasts are the sunniest and driest. The afternoon northeast trade winds are a genuine factor for golfers and their club selection throughout the year, adding to the already great test that the courses on the island pose.

Most Canary Islands rounds fall between roughly $90 and $180, with the high season being the traditional winter months between October and March. This is due to the amazing all year-round sunshine the Canary Islands enjoys! A buggy on some courses is mandatory and, with many being quite hilly, is also quite often advised – especially as it’s hot on most days.

FIVE CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT U.S. CUP

The United States Golf Teachers Cup is annually the largest gathering of USGTF members in the country and serves an important function beyond competition. Members are able to meet others from around the nation, renew old acquaintances and make new friendships. In addition, it is a great chance to meet members of the National Office staff, including president and CEO Brandon Lee.

First-time player Matthew Abramson won a closely-fought battle in the Open division over runner-up and two-time champion Ken Kim. Abramson fired rounds of 68-74 – 142. In the Senior division, Kirk Junge’s four-year winning streak came to a halt as Vernon Doswell shot 71-75 – 146 to best runner-up Deron Owns. In the Super Senior division, a three-way tie between Jong Ki Kwak, Jeff Campbell and Jim Perez at 153 necessitated a the first scorecard playoff in U.S. Cup history, won by Kwak. If ever was a time for Team International to win the Presidents Cup, heading into Sunday Singles in 2026 was it. Taking a 10.5-7.5 lead into the final day, the International squad played the best golf by far the first three days. However, a complete collapse on Sunday led to an American victory, 17-13.

Much credit goes to captain Brandt Snedeker, whose six captain’s picks went 6-0 in Sunday singles. Of the three rookies on the team, first-year pro Jackson Koivun was especially impressive with a record of 2-0-1 in his three matches. Just this past spring, Koivun was playing collegiate golf for Auburn University, but quickly made his mark on the PGA Tour when he held off Scottie Scheffler to win the 3M Open on the PGA Tour this past summer. He certainly looks to be the next big star in golf.

I helped my father coach my former high school golf team from 2012-2016. Doing this really helped me to find my passion for teaching others the game of golf.

In 2014 I began my golf career as an assistant golf professional at Conestoga Golf Club in Mesquite, Nevada. I taught there until 2017, and then I went to Mesquite Gaming as a sales manager in their group sales department.

I also received my certification through the USGTF in 2020. Since coming here, I have been able to work with golfers of all skill levels and have been enjoying it since day one. My game feels great, and I am currently working on getting back into tournament play, with two events upcoming this fall.

My wife Jacque and I have two children, son Zane who is three years old and a daughter, Myla, who is 12 months old. Zane has had an immediate love for the game since he could walk and loves going out and playing golf with dad, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

My favorite thing about teaching is helping students find that “light bulb” moment when everything comes together, and they can see the goal we have been working towards.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT – CORBAN UNIVERSITY GOLF TEAM

I recently became the director of golf instruction at Corban University in Salem, Oregon. I have just completed my first year with the team. Although I have my own private golf instruction practice, I felt called to reach out to Corban University to see if there was an opportunity to give back some golf experience to the men’s and women’s teams.

The desire to give back happened when I was introduced to golf. I was a 7th grader taking a lesson from a local professional. At the first lesson, my instructor asked me what I wanted from the lesson. I said, “I would like a swing that will last a lifetime.” He responded, “I can do that.”
这份回馈的念头源于我初识高尔夫之时。那年我读七年级，跟着一位当地职业教练上课。第一节课上，教练问我希望通过课程获得什么。我说：“我想要一个能用一辈子的挥杆。”他回答：“这个我能做到。”

I am now 67 and what he taught me is still with me today. I enjoy teaching golf to all ages, but especially the college age. My goal is to share what I have learned with the next generation and learn from them.

The golf teams currently compete within the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). The teams are comprised of 12 men and nine women golfers. Most players are local; however, we have players from the Midwest, Nevada, Montana, and one from Africa. It has been a great experience to be on this journey that started August 2025 and see their progress to the present.

I am blessed to be able to focus on all things golf rather than the administration piece, which is handled by head coach Charlie Marshall. He has been gracious to allow me to focus on the golf disciplines, i.e., ball striking, short game (chipping, putting, bunker play), and most importantly, the mental aspects of the game. I made a promise early on that I would not undo or change their golf swings, but focus on a golf process and work within their talent.

One of the opportunities has been to observe all 21 players’ golf processes. My USGTF private practice has taught me to document details that are being covered with students and keep the drills and aspects fresh and current. One thing I like best about working with college students is they will voice their opinions and let you know if the information being communicated is understood and effective.

One interesting thought I want to share with other USGTF members relates to practice plans. I was asked to develop practice plans with the players. I discovered using ChatGPT that within minutes, you can develop and customize a practice plan with your student(s). I asked ChatGPT to produce a practice plan for certain criteria and quickly a document was produced that can be adapted to what works for the player and matured over time.
我想与其他 USGTF 会员分享一个关于训练计划的有趣心得。当时球员们请我帮忙制定训练计划，我发现借助 ChatGPT，短短几分钟内就能和学员一起生成并定制一份训练计划。我让 ChatGPT 按特定要求生成方案，很快便得到一份文档，可以根据球员的实际情况灵活调整，并随着时间不断打磨完善。

As I look back over the past months, I have seen great progress. I measure progress not just in a golf score, but rather the players character, team dynamics, golf process improvement, attitude, and living out their faith. I see the drills and details that we are working on coming out on the golf course, which is very satisfying. A recent first, second, and third sweep by our men’s team at a tournament in Washington state was very cool.

EDITORIAL – WHAT EXPERTISE AND ROLES ARE NECESSARY TO COACH A HIGH SCHOOL TEAM TO SUCCESS?

In this day and age of YouTube and internet golf instruction, it is easy to get lost in the woods, so to speak (and sometimes literally with wayward ball striking!). A lot of golfers want to learn on their own without professional instruction, and this includes high school golfers.
在这个 YouTube 与网络高尔夫教学盛行的时代，人们很容易“迷失在树林里”——有时还真是字面意义上的（打出歪球直入林间！）。许多高尔夫球手不愿接受专业指导而选择自学，高中生球员也不例外。

Of course, there are different levels of high school golf. Some teams have serious players hoping to play in college and perhaps professionally, and some are built around players just seeking to have fun. In any case, it is the coach’s job to coach and not babysit. This means knowing enough about the game to be able to help players improve, and one of the best ways to do this is for a high school coach to have USGTF/WGTF certification. After successful completion of the Associate Member course, that person is qualified to give a competent lesson to beginner to average players, which should constitute most high school golfers.

In addition to certification, high school golf coaches need to formulate practice plans and qualifying criteria. There are numerous resources online that can help with this. Finally, coaches need to look at their players with an unbiased filter. For example, there are coaches who won’t play freshmen, no matter how good they are (yes, this happened to one of the members of the USGTF Technical Committee!), or play someone who used to be one of the top players but no longer is. But most of all, being a high school golf coach means developing their golfers more as people than golfers, and that’s something we can all be thankful for.
